As you know, the Alberta chapter of CCPA (Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association) has been working to regulate the profession of counselling in Alberta for over a decade.
The CCPA is part of FACT-AB, an organization that represents 14 professional counselling associations in the province.
They've been working very closely with the NDP government on regulation for the past three years. At this time the government will not commit to putting it on the legislative agenda this year, before the election.
The challenge is that while the government continues to express support for regulating Counselling Therapists under the HPA, it has stated that it is not a priority for legislative resources in the next year.
As a matter of public safety, this is not acceptable to the association. They've done the necessary work over the last decade to ensure regulation happens for Albertans and they'll be ready for legislation this year.
Dr. David Swann agrees that it will help to achieve many of the recommendations of the Valuing Mental Health report of the Alberta Mental Health Review Committee.
In the next month, there is an opportunity to make this regulation happen. This is your chance to help make history and bring about widespread, positive and systemic change to mental health in Alberta. Can we count on your support?
It only takes a few minutes to enter your information and the website automatically sends a letter to your MLA.
Every letter counts, and we are hoping to convince the government to make this a priority now.
